Still No Hands On With the Surface

Not sure how I missed this, but Wired was present at a private RocketSpace event in San Francisco yesterday. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer spoke to developers about the income potential to them if they develop for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.
Ballmer apparently showed off the highly-anticipated upcoming Windows RT Surface tablet. Interestingly, the tablet (along with Windows 8) is set to be released at midnight on October 26th. However, I can't help but wonder what all the secrecy is about with the Surface as Ballmer did not allow anyone to touch or even inspect the present Surface tablet. Why?
Certainly, the Surface has got to be one of the biggest Microsoft launches in years, but no one at least publicly has put in any hands-on time. Since the Surface has been announced, the release date set, wouldn't Microsoft want to hype it up by letting someone use it and report back his or her findings and early thoughts to whit up the hype?
The release is only 1 month from today.
Furthermore, Microsoft hasn't even announced pricing for the tablets.
Does Ballmer know he has a goose egg here?
